About Mike Rice Outside

My life has been a series of run-on sentences strung between the mountains and the sea recorded on cocktail napkins, scraps of paper and random photographs with the hopes of someday editing them into one good story. After 25 years in the fly fishing industry as a commercial fly tier I've decided to spend more time outside writing about and photographing the people, places and experiences I encounter. 

I look for stories about people and places that are not in "print," those on the outside somewhere in the whiteness of the margins and in the spaces between spaces. I collected many in my blog, "Backwater Flats" that I started in 2013. Some of them make me think, some make me laugh and some break my heart. I'll be bringing over my favorites here as I add new material. I invite you to visit here often and come with me upriver, along the coast, into the hills and over dirt roads.

I work with my partner, Jill, at Jill Mason Art, using her creative eye to create coastal themed wall art for the home, office and business. Our images are printed on archival quality canvas, rendered with brushstrokes, glazed and applied to a hand-built wooden base which is then framed with weathered repurposed wood. Our collection of photography has been curated from hours of kayaking, walking, fishing and traveling back roads. Sometimes I get distracted and find images outside the normal purview of JMA. We've decided to offer some of these here in the store.
